Daily Yinz – XC-17 – RIDRARC

A sneak preview of the first single from XC-17’s upcoming album, due out later this year.

XC-17, a former member of the spectral RnB duo ALONA and a founder of the LGBTQ dance party group Dyspheric, is releasing a full-length album later this year, and was kind enough to share some of it with Bored In Pittsburgh, including the first single, “RIDRARC,” due out officially on 2/23 but available today at the bottom of this page. The track possesses the frenetic tempo of drum and bass, but renders the sound muddy and muted and alien through the use of gurgling low notes and woozy wobbles; the percussion would rather mutter deviously into your ear than wallop you over the head.

Tracks that will grace listener’s ears at later dates include “WRLDZ,” a billowing cloud of horror movie atmosphere full of menacing static and subconscious-altering blips, “LISP,” a digital jackhammer–punctuated by the rumble of a demonic fist knocking on a door–that builds to a metallic flutter of a rhythm, “SKETCH,” (a collaboration with fellow electronic artist and Dyspheric member Yessi) a thumping heartbeat augmented by amorphous, yearning vocals and dashes of electronic sparkle, and “HiKZ,” a twitchy squelch that sounds like a mechanical bug trying to worm its way out of a confined space. Perfect for fans of odd sounds and beats that grab you by the brain.
