Daily Yinz – Pat Coyle – Long Game

Pat Coyle’s latest single, “Long Game,” is a shoulder pat (no pun intended) for the stressed out soul.

As someone who gets so bogged down with the anxieties and sticking points of minute-to-minute life that my brain sometimes feels like a computer frozen mid-crash, it resonated with me when I heard Pat Coyle sing, “Pay more attention to the long game in front of you,” on his latest single, “Long Game,” a warm embrace of a song that manages to scoop out a peaceful little burrow underneath time’s rushing surface. Coyle looks not only forward toward hope but backward toward suffering, urging, “Pay more attention to the lost days catching up to you/More attention to the long pain claiming you.” Whimsical sound effects–an unsheathing blade, a teakettle synth, a ding–pop in and out like imaginary friends whose sole purpose is to get you to take a deep breath and drink a glass of water. Coyle ultimately finds solace in the universal salve; human connection, repeating, “Oh what else to do but come and kiss me.”
