Daily Yinz – Chains of Desire – Centralia

Chains of Desire creates abrasive synth music that seems to disintegrate as it plays.

Centralia is a town in Northeastern PA in which a coal fire burns permanently underground. Its buildings have been condemned, its ZIP code discontinued. Five people still live in Centralia despite extended eviction efforts by state and local government bodies. Stubbornness is one of humanity’s great motivators. “Centralia,” a mid-album track from Chains of Desire’s recently released Youth & Industry, is the kind of thing that these five remaining residents would throw on at a dance party held atop the smoking and graffitied section of abandoned highway that used to lead into town. The track’s video game bloops and driving industrial rhythms would sound ecstatic if not for the screeching stabs of blown-out grit and the vocals that echo like stones dropped into a rusted metal chute. The only thing more disconcerting than a ghost town is a near-ghost town, and Chains of Desire taps into that same strain of unease in especially vigorous fashion.
