Daily Yinz – Wyborn – Wicker Eye

Wyborn’s new EP is a dazed rush of feeling.

There’s a character in the movie Coraline whose name is Wyborn, and at one point the movie’s titular protagonist refers to this character as “why-were-you-born.” “Why were you born?” feels like one of the animating questions behind “Wicker Eye,” a song that explores the disorienting nature of human relationships through propulsive rhythms, effervescent guitar chimes, and vocals that sigh and reel as they contemplate the vast internal spaces that become illuminated by the continuous and intimate presence of another person. At one point Wyborn marvels, “You’re irresistible / You’re always laughing at my stupid jokes / I was indifferent / Now I never want to be alone.” In many ways, to love someone in a real sense is to start your life–not over, but start, period. It’s a feeling both magical and frightening to realize that the answer to the question “Why were you born?” may lie in a person who was a stranger to you for your first decades, and Wyborn captures that feeling by ending with the line, “God damn, it’s a nightmare to be in love / Take my head and don’t look back.” The best thing a love song can be is honest, and Wyborn accomplishes that to dizzying effect.
