The first single from the trio’s upcoming album, No Arc, makes ennui danceable.
Sure, life might just be the experience of finding yourself “stuck in a jar breathing carbon.” It might sometimes feel like the equivalent of sitting in a fluorescent room and listening to the sounds of machines artificially regulating the temperature “in the grim incandescence of a torturous strip of magnetic humming in hot silence.” But when you’ve got a compact guitar groove and a floor-filling drumbeat beckoning you to get on your feet and move around the drab liminal space, you start noticing details: maybe the cartoon that’s been looping on the mounted TV has some goofy animals, that magazine you’ve only glanced at has a crossword hidden at the back, that person’s shoes are interesting, and look, there are some musical easter eggs: Talking Heads (“And you’ll find yourself on that road and say, ‘Hey! How did I get here?'”), David Bowie and Queen AND Hüsker Dü (“‘Let me out!’ from this zen arcade”), and best of all, Lou ReedTallica (“I am the view/And I am the table”). Yes, we’re still stuck, but Rave Ami assures us that it’s not quite as bad as it sounds.
