Daily Yinz – Madame Dolores – I wasn’t supposed to be HERE

CHAOS is the first installation in Madame Dolores’s four-part naeama series.

Naeama, short for Navigating Earth Manual, is a multimedia project that includes audiovisual and literary components. The work seeks to illuminate a path of strength, justice, and decency in a world whose governments and power apparatuses embody the opposite qualities. The ten pieces featured on CHAOS, the first album associated with naeama, are raw, confrontational streams of consciousness delivered over seething electronic instrumentals. Madame Dolores repeats and plays with words until they’re broken down into their component units of sound and finally reconstituted as cleansing incantations. “I wasn’t supposed to be HERE” closes the album on an especially haunting note, as Madame whispers while “Laying on the floor / Staring at the crack in the wall,” before building to a trancelike intonation–“My ancestors stood in the fog / Calling my name / You’ve got to go back / TO LIVE you don’t belong here”–undergirded by ghostly drones and hissing percussion. It’s a beckoning finger rising from the elemental heart of humanity, an invitation to return.
