An otherworldly new release from the Astral Research label.
BODY OF RESEARCH’s Center Communication contains field recordings gleaned from abandoned cement and glass factories and augmented with guitars and electronics. The release’s three spacious pieces conjure images of reclamation: shoots squeezing between cracks in concrete, sun shining through dilapidated stretches of roof, birds nesting atop crumbling support pillars. Opener “Woke Up In Desire” layers wispy swirls of guitar overtop warbling sonar pings and sheets of hissing mechanical noise. The melody and the grit overtake each other at various points, creating a sense of push-and-pull between industry’s acrid corrosion and the pastoral beauty that both precedes it and reemerges in its wake. It feels like a green presence waking up gradually from a long sleep, stretching its arms and watching for a while as clouds morph across the sky.
