Daily Yinz – Dream Home – Lake Artemesia

Dream Home knocks the sound of rock music invitingly off-kilter.

There’s a dulled sensation I get in my head the morning after a night of restless sleep. It registers visually as well as mentally; surroundings look a bit wonky, like they’re being viewed through trick glass. Dream Home’s latest release, Hold On So Tough, passes the traditional rock setup–guitar, bass, drums–through the same type of muddled filter. The trio’s songs feature smeared jangles and agitated churns from the six-string set against a crisp, spry rhythm section; Jaren Love’s words pitch and roll like the deck of a seasick ship, and there’s a whirly Wurlitzer thrown in there as well. “Lake Artemesia,” named after a man-made body of water in Prince George’s County, Maryland, shuffles along in a pedal steel haze; the melody sounds like something Neil Young might come up with, but, in this song, the moon looks the way it does not because of the Harvest, but because it’s being viewed through the translucent orange plastic of an anti-anxiety pill bottle. For a live rendition, come to the Government Center this Saturday 2/17 for the Hold On So Tough release show.
