According to a quick internet search, you have a 1 in 187,000 chance of being struck by lightning this year, and a 1 in 292,000,000 chance of winning the Powerball. Jon Bygone understand that, if you want to get lucky, you’re better off standing in a sodden field in the pouring rain than you are buying a scratcher at the corner store. Over frantic drums and gnarled, atonal riffs, the band explores the odds in truly unhinged fashion, using both elemental imagery (“Flooding lands / Hail damage / The mudslides”) and brain-fried neurosis (“I just wanna win big once because then I can be the fucking best […] I can make my grandma proud”). By the time the track grinds to a halt, it’s devolved into a clanging, freeform rant. A bold first effort from a band to watch.
