Daily Yinz – Gracyn Blu Louis – october

Bedroom artist’s latest single is an ethereal rush of melancholy.

Gracyn Blu Louis started work on “october” with the goal of creating a simple, layered a cappella piece. They ended up with an intricate arrangement–full of vocal harmonies and synths and percussive additions generated with hands and breath–that broke their computer. The song centers on an eerily modulated vocal hook whose lyrics convey a grief that blurs days into weeks into months; “How is it already October?” Louis repeats, dazed. As the music builds, Louis works their voice even more deeply into the song’s fabric, chopping vocal lines into pieces and treating the breathy fragments like keys on a keyboard. By the time the bittersweet climax hits and the rhythm morphs into a thumping dance beat, Louis vocals have blended fully with the surrounding music to rapturous, soul-cleansing effect. RIP to the computer that gave its life for this one; it did not die in vain.
