A distress signal sent up from a terrible workplace.
Even though “Bada Bing!” is one of Secret Tunnel’s debut singles, the band already sounds like it’s at the end of its rope. The song opens with an image of true paycheck-to-paycheck desolation, served extra bummed-out over melancholy chords: “The friend of the friend of the owner of this bar / Said that your service rate wasn’t up to par / So they complain to the only one in charge / Of your at-will employment.” The Sword of Damocles reincarnated as a drunk douchebag. While the band members might be weary, the music they create is anything but. Soon after that bleak first image, double-shot espresso drums crash into the picture and jitter away while agile guitar riffs race fuzzily. The refrain, “The only thing you’re sick of is everything” hits with such anthemic desperation that you’ll want to give your two-weeks notice on the spot, complete with a raised middle finger. Work can be brutal, but at least we’re not alone in our suffering.
