Daily Yinz – Unfurl – Hyperviolet Estuary

Metal quartet Unfurl’s third album, Ascension, is an apocalyptic merging of bruising and melodic styles.

Unfurl will just as soon weave you a tapestry of gauzy arpeggios and gentle vocals as they will pummel you with blastbeats, pile-driver guitars, and ghoulish howls. The evocatively-named “Hyperviolet Estuary” rides intricate, fretboard-traversing riffs through passages of crushing savagery and droning lamentation; the lyrics, by turns roared and sung, conjure a hellish landscape (“Pitch black skies spare no stars for guidance[…]Empty shrines provide no providence”), using the dramatic imagery as a backdrop for the throwing down of the existentialist gauntlet: “It’s not what you think that makes you who you’ll become in this life[…]It’s what you do with your time that makes you who you are.”
