For his latest single, rapper Lando Ash pays tribute to Mr. Paul Avery from Zodiac, Mr. Not-Benedict-Cumberbatch Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Tony Stark, the Iron Man himself.
“Robert Downey Jr” is a pure stunt track, given an offbeat edge by Lando’s eccentric boasts (“Back away, ‘cuz we’re cooking/Martha Stewart!”) and oddball asides (“What about my love life? Wish I had a pepper”). The WvvinLvne-produced instrumental combines hard-knocking drums with muted wisps of melody, giving Lando a springboard from which to launch into his sci-fi superhero bars; there’s talk of unibeams, arc reactors, J.A.R.V.I.S., and more. The track’s excellent hook, delivered with a flow that tapers from rapid-fire to deliberate, contains a pun sandwiched between two extreme hypotheticals: “If I was the man with the iron they love, I was Robert Downey Jr./Got a lot on my chest like Robert Downey Jr./If I could blast with my hands, I was Robert Downey Jr.” Like Tony Stark, Lando is constantly building toward greater things–who knows, maybe he’ll end up fighting evil Jeff Bridges in a robot suit one day.
