Simone Joy Jones (aka S!MONE) is a Pittsburgh-based artist whose debut EP, Divine Mistakes, contains seven lush, multilayered R&B tracks.
“Jealous,” the EP’s most propulsive cut, rides a rhythmic backbone that splits the difference between trap and reggaeton, with rapid-fire cymbal hits fluttering over a tresillo base. Glistening, jazz-tinged guitars drip from all directions, creating a sonic greenhouse space in which S!MONE takes time to reflect on her ambivalent feelings toward a relationship, displaying some impressive vocal chops in the process. Her performance contains easy bursts of falsetto, scatting breakdowns, and belted phrases that hit head-spinning clusters of notes in quick succession. It’s a catchy, genre-blending, effortlessly delivered track that highlights a strong debut.
