Producer and rapper Yorel Tifsim follows last year’s excellent Theresonlynow with They Call Them Nownlaters, a collection of woozy instrumentals.
The music found on Nownlaters, like the backing tracks that anchored the lush, blunted raps of Theresonlynow, is incredibly tactile, like a giant bean bag chair for your senses. The mellifluous “Sweetngood” allows you to sink in the furthest of any of the project’s offerings. Built around a vocal sample that seems to osmose through a barrier of fine red wide and cigar smoke, it also includes a crisp, leisurely drum loop, and some of the most tender keyboard tones you’ll hear this side of Anita Baker. It’s another sonic salve from one of Pittsburgh’s most distinctive beatmakers.
