Pittsburgh rapper Livefromthecity dedicated his latest release, a three-song project called Party Favors, to the life of Breonna Taylor.
Opener “Back to Church,” a bracing gut check of a track that rides atop a windswept, Spaghetti Western instrumental, decries the destruction wrought by the hydra-headed menace of gun violence (“Man down on Sherman/Man down on Laketon/Man down on Swissvale/Man, my heart can’t take it!”) and mass incarceration (“Too many doing hard time/Black mommas that we saw cryin'”). Set against this grim backdrop, Live turns the lens on himself, calling out his own vices, straining against the bonds of anger and depression, and resolving to work toward gaining “respect, not attention.” Despite the gritty sense of resolve, a shadow hangs over everything; during the song’s refrain, Live raps, “You only get flowers and kind words when you’re in back of a hearse.” “Back to Church” is a powerful statement from one of the city’s most magnetic voices.
