Ill Advanced is a Pittsburgh rapper whose sound draws from the time-honored boom-bap tradition.
Ill’s latest album, Unwritten Divine Rule, a collection of hazy samples, dusty drums, and thoughtful lyrics, dropped in late February. My personal favorite track from the project is “St. Mary Loretta,” a heartfelt tribute to Ill’s late grandmother, a woman who would “comfort anyone that stepped under the roof/regardless [of] creed or color.” Backed by wavering, sepia-toned keys and a head-nodding beat, Ill recalls walking up the hill to his grandmother’s cemetery plot to find that his girlfriend had placed fresh flowers on the grave. Moved, he feels his grandmother’s essence swirling in the air around him, and is comforted by her nurturing spirit.
