Speed Plans are a Pittsburgh hardcore act whose second album of 2019 is appropriately titled More Hardcore.
“American Gun,” the album’s second track, hints at glammy swagger for about seven seconds before bursting into half a minute of distorted punk fury. It sounds like Hüsker Dü hitting a polluted beach, a quick, seesawing two-chord passage bringing to mind images of crashing waves and frantic surfing wipeouts. Unlike Eeking Out, Speed Plans’ March debut, More Hardcore doesn’t even include an “illegible lyric sheet,” so I have no clue what the band’s lead singer is saying, but I know that he sounds energized and pissed off, as any hardcore singer worth their salt should. Let this song punch you with its brass knuckles, and enjoy.
