Nathan King is a Pittsburgh-based synth warlock who creates spooky soundscapes that issue forth from the shadows of the Steel City.
“Old Dark House,” the titular track from King’s recent two-song release, hearkens back to the sound of the so-called witch house movement of the early 2010s, albeit a lighter and more buoyant version than that peddled by the likes of Salem and Glass Teeth. Diaphonous synth pads bump up against video game leads overtop a midtempo electronica beat, setting the stage for a vocoder-enhanced wraith to swing by and contribute a few indiscernible passages. The whole thing is swathed in a coating of grime, like it was dunked in a marsh for a few minutes before seeing the light of day. There’s no need to be afraid of this “Old Dark House”; enter and enjoy the sounds.
