Daily Listen-Car Seat Headrest-Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales

I don’t really have too much to say about today’s song, because I think it speaks for itself. Car Seat Headrest gets some shit sometimes for being /mu/core to a fault; the top comment on this video reads, “now this is the kinda hipster garbage i love. A++”. I have to agree with this half ironic, half sincere sentiment, because I really believe that “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in a while. I don’t think the track is literally about drunk drivers or killer whales; frontman Will Toledo seems to be comparing the melancholy desperation of his (and, I guess, my) generation to the mindset of people who decide to drive without control of their own capacities and also to that of incarcerated aquatic mammals. And, for some reason, it makes sense. Toledo’s lyrics are unadorned to the point of being uncomfortable; you really feel it when he sings, “I have become such a negative person,” so matter-of-factly, because you’ve been there as well (or at least I have). In the bridge, he says, “But if we learn how to live like this/Maybe we can learn how to start again,” leaving room for some hope of a better future for these drunk drivers/killer whales/disaffected youth/whoever he’s talking about. A great song if you don’t mind “hipster garbage.”
