I just re-watched The Matrix for the first time in a while, and I enjoyed it even more than I did the first time. I had to pick Rage Against The Machine’s “Wake Up” to write about because it is inexorably linked to the movie’s closing scene. The second Keanu Reeves’s Neo hangs up the receiver in a downtown phone booth after delivering a typically affectless, “heavy, man” monologue, Tom Morello’s iconic one-chord guitar riff (which bears more than a little resemblance to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”) kicks in. Neo strides out of the booth, puts on his tiny sunglasses, and flies off into the sky as Morello rips into a siren-like squall of notes. Badass! But actually, The Matrix is a great movie, and this song and band are also great. Worth a watch and/or listen for some 90’s nostalgia.
